Using “La La Land” to showcase L.A. Unified’s magnet program, students from the Millikan Middle School Performing Arts Magnet created “Another Day of Fun,” a video parody of the opening scene from the Oscar-winning film, which was shown to educators attending the Magnet Schools of America Conference in Los Angeles. The following article was submitted by seventh-grader Christian Perez and eighth-grader Aaron Nemiroff about the making of the video.

Over a nine-day period, about 250 students from the Millikan Performing Arts Magnet in Sherman Oaks collaborated and filmed the opening scene from “La La Land.” Magnet Coordinator Lisa Nuñez and Magnet Assistant Takara Adair wrote new lyrics for the Oscar-nominated “Another Day of Sun,” transforming it to “Another Day of Fun” to reflect the day in the life of a Millikan student. Slices of later scenes were added to the montage to pay tribute to the movie.

Millikan Middle School Performing Arts Magnet was chosen by L.A. Unified because of its award-winning arts program. The Musical Theatre, Choir, Jazz Combo, Stage Crew, and Costume Design programs all worked together on this production. Millikan was honored to get the opportunity to do this.

No matter what their role, each of the students had an important part in the final product. The students created all of the choreography without any help from the staff. Asked how it felt to be part of the video, eighth-grade musical theater performer Sasha Matthews responded, “I was really shocked when I heard I was going to be in this. It felt really good to know that I was wanted to be in this big of a film production.” Classmate Hannah Phillips said the experience was great. “We got to feel what it was like to be on a real set,” she said.

This video was shown Friday to Superintendent King, local district superintendents, principals and other educators attending the Magnet Schools of America conference at the Bonaventure Hotel. Millikan Middle School worked hard on this video and hopes everybody will enjoy it. All of the people in this production are very proud of their work.
