L.A. Unified has joined with the state of California in officially recognizing the third week of May as Classified School Employee Week in honor of classified school employees and the contributions they make to the educational community. Each day this week, we will profile a Classified employee selected by the Personnel Commission’s Organizational Excellence Branch for their exemplary work in support of students. Today, we honor Juan Amezcua, a Building and Grounds worker at Daniel Pearl Magnet High School.
Reliable, dependable, flexible, friendly, responsible, honest and hard-working are just a few adjectives that colleagues, students and parents use to describe Juan Amezcua, the District’s Exemplary Classified Employee of the Year.
And the list of his attributes goes on and on.
Juan has been with the District for over 14 years. His supervisor, Sal Rivas, proudly shared that Juan has had perfect attendance in the four years he has served as custodian at Daniel Pearl Magnet High School in Lake Balboa. He takes great pride in his work and ensures that the campus is safe and clean. He never hesitates to work or volunteer during nights and weekends, whenever he’s asked.
When the school’s plant manager unexpectedly passed away, Juan stepped in and shouldered the responsibility for the school’s maintenance, cleanliness and management of substitute custodians.
“During this time, Mr. Amezcua showed tremendous care and concern for the entire staff and school community in this very devastating loss. He stepped in in spite of the fact that he, too, was grieving the loss of his colleague, mentor and friend,” Pearl Principal Debbie Smith said.
Juan is an excellent role model for the students at Daniel Pearl and encourages them to do their best and stay focused on the goal of graduation and career/college aspirations. He is beloved by the students, parents, faculty and staff of the school. Juan is truly deserving of the honor of being selected as the Exemplary Classified Employee of the Year.
