L.A. Unified has joined with the state of California in officially recognizing the third week of May as Classified School Employee Week in honor of classified school employees and the contributions they make to the educational community. Each day this week, we will profile a Classified employee selected by the Personnel Commission’s Organizational Excellence Branch for their exemplary work in support of students. Today, we honor Chan Ly, a dot-net developer from the Enterprise Applications Department of the Information Technology Division.

A 2015 graduate of Cal Poly Pomona with a degree in computer science and a minor in math, Chan Ly began his career at L.A. Unified as a programming intern in the Information Technology Division. Among the significant contributions he made in his first year on the job was taking the District’s employee evaluation system from a traditional paper-based model to one that is more in line with current technologies. His intuitive, patient and inquisitive nature allowed him to lead his team of programmers to success. The project was completed ahead of schedule and launched successfully. Since its introduction, more than 33,000 employee online evaluations have been completed.

Ly’s day-to-day work includes creating programs for teachers, classified employees, parents and students. He has played a key role in supporting instructional goals in L.A. Unified, having developed the annual Student Survey Application and Dashboard, which allows students to evaluate their teacher’s classroom instruction and provide feedback on their learning. He has also been instrumental in improving operations, having developed tools that streamline the work of school support staff and time reporters across the District.

With a strong work ethic and knack for customer service, Ly works simultaneously on multiple initiatives, helping to fulfill business needs, consistently completing projects on schedule and within budget. His ability to understand customers and perform the work to meet their needs in a timely and high-quality manner have earned him the recognition as this year’s outstanding Classified Employee in the Technical/Professional Category.
